When I was like 10 I thought you could repeatedly zip files to get higher and higher space savings at the cost of decompression time
This is you. You're as dumb as a 10 year old.

no that is much dumber than what im saying.
4 identical images should trivially compress to the size of 1, you are still as dumb as you were when you were 10

Zip doesn't do file deduplication, there are other compression algorithms for that

why the FUCK doesn't it do that
millions and billions of people use it for the purpose of reducing file size and you're telling me microsoft never thought about that?

it's a tradeoff
zip is very fast at extracting a single file
something like 7z will do what you expect but try to extract a single file and it has to actually decompress the entire archive first

MacOS I believe manages files such that each file has a unique id when it is created; this never changes and is used to locate files when they are moved.

I have lots of photo albums on my computer with tons of duplicates across them; I’d like to deduplicate them by having a main album like how MacOS manages it and just share the master file to each folder, sort of like how you can install a program and make it available to all users instead of just installing it for one user.

zip is 1990's tech,
literally from the previous millennia
