I know that most of /g/ are code monkeys but have any of you ever worked anything even lower like a helpdesk? How was it?

My first job was in a warehouse. Sometimes they let me observe the DOS terminal to see how many orders I've got left. Pretty nifty in-house system that used some kind of wonky algorithm that would tell how many boxes of frozen foods can be fit on one pallet that can be fit inside a cargo truck. Probably very simple and something non AWS Amazon coding Indians do.

we had the same thread a while back but
>fresh out of college a few years ago
>no jobs
>recruiter contacts me asking if I want to work a helpdesk
>he assures me that its internal support for other employees only and I'm desperate for cash so I take it
>training was a slideshow with nothing about the apps we'd be supporting
>start job a week later with zero access to most of the apps we ever support
>a good 50-60% of the calls I get are people who are just calling in to cuss us out and scream about non issues
>AAAAAAAAAAA OUTLOOK WAS REMOVED FROM THE TASKBAR AGAIN YOU STUPID PIECE OF SHIT FIX IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>I HAVE AN ISSUE WITH AN APP NO I WON'T CLARIFY WHAT ISSUE JUST FIX IT FIX IT FIX IT
>EMAIL ME MY PASSWORD RIGHT NOW I FORGOT IT AND I'M NOT CHANGING IT AGAIN
>MY CAMERA IS BROKEN!!!! FIX IT NOW!!!! NO I DON'T HAVE A PRIVACY SLIDE THAT'S JUST CLOSED!!! (every single model of laptop we used had one)
>people mad that they can't remember what font they used to use in outlook 10 years and want me to somehow know
>people threatening to kick my ass because of gifs aren't loading in teams
>people calling for lunch/travel reimbursement and screaming when we ask them to call hr because this is tech support
>people who's job has been sitting in front of a computer for 99.999% of their time at work bragging to us they're not a tech person over simple issues
>if anything was reported to hr they would tell us to report it to our manager who would go through the proper channels
>manager outright admitted to us she did nothing because it was too much trouble to report things properly
>final straw was a manager with workday access pulling up my employee profile and reading off my home address to me in a threatening tone
I quit after that and deleted and recreated my linkedin profile and used my former manager's title as my own, I now work a do nothing middle management job making triple what I did then

Yea Ive worked helpdesk in various roles for like 10 years.

I kinda like it. Its easy for me now so I can just autopilot, but there is enough variety to not get bored especially with how much MS moves and changes things in Windows and 365 Admin.

Its all been remote too, I mean the support.

I still go to an office but its all connecting over Teamviewer/sc/bomgar so no annoying users walking up. On-site IT, a different department usually handles that.

Get ready for 0 documentation, sfc /scannow and windows update being a bitch. I do windows server work/migrations/apps/office 365 admin/intune too so I guess Im 2nd line now.

Install vmware workstation on your gamer PC and you can make a little corporate network, all you need to lab around really. Install windows server, ad, sccm and a win11 client. Get a personal 365 business sub and play around with that too for intune.

Classic lolw

Consumer laptops usually dont have these so users dont know how they work. Tbh I didnt either until I started on Elitebooks.

I worked at geek squad for a bit in college
>obvious pedo came in once asking us to help him get on the dark web and asking us how to get unblocked on instagram
>had a guy one time get so mad that he /literally/ shit his pants right in front of us at the counter while screaming about how we owed him money (a laptop that he had bought like 5 years prior had stopped working and he wanted a free replacement)
>a jew in a kippah begging us to save his business because everything he had was on some like 15 year old hard drive and he was too cheap to pay for any sort of backup
>literally said time is money like 5 times while talking to him then tried to haggle the price at the end (I'm still not convinced this wasn't some candid camera shit)
>an old man in a wheelchair threatened to pull himself out of his wheelchair jump over the counter and kick my ass he then went on a rant about being a veteran and how he wished he could kill people like me
>this was all because I told him I needed to help someone with an appointment first and then I would get to him after since he was a random walk up with no appointment
