You're nuts if you trust a mechanically fragile storage medium outside of a computer. If you're that poor consider using DVDs for storage if you're too for an external SSD. It'll be slower but at least your files won't go up in smoke if they fall off a table.

don't get a WD passport the connections always fail and they suck

IMO, get that canvio as a backup for your backup and get a X9 or a T7 for main backup

just trying to not spend a crazy amount per TB. Open to suggestions though besides DVD. Would like a HDD or SSD to transfer and hold stuff as a backup

Did not know that, I'll look into the X9 or T7. pulling the trigger just to hold stuff during my install but would like something I can throw stuff on long term and not worry

>large storage
4-5 tb 2.5โ€, every single model is pretty much the same no matter the producer
>LARGE storage
20+ TB 3.5โ€, twice the speed of 2.5โ€ but theyโ€™re loud, hot and untrustworthy
>documents n shit, large amount of files or sub 2TB
buy a 2TB ssd and one of those cheapo 10gb/s enclosures, upgrade to 40gb/s in a year when prices fall by 70%

ACTUALLY if you LITERALLY cool SSDs when powered off, they can match or even outperform the lifespan of LTO tape.

I have this drive. Have had it since January. No problems yet.
Regardless of the model, don't trust your backups to one drive. There is a routine from old mainframe days called "odd even" backups. You get two drives and you alternate. Today you back up on one drive. Next time on the other. Repeat. It's in case of a catastrophic failure *during the backup procedure*.
