I think they planned to use these to get pics of everyone where they are and whatever but perverts and 4chan users started using them for gooning so they quashed them. So instead they put cameras to capture your face in front of every point of sale in every large company to collect data that way.

I was 11 years old and absolutely obsessed with all the new aesthetic tech at the time (google glass, moto 360, phone screens getting bigger)
