What is the state of Nvidia on Linux in 2025?

If you use Arch it's fine if you use anything else it will take you 90 minutes to figure out which package has the firmware you need. This goes for most hardware.

Just retards buttmad that the driver isn't open source and delivered on a silver platter exactly as they would prefer.

As far as users, nvidia just fukken werks.

Worked on my machine (I switched to AMD eventually)

530 drivers were extremely ass on both Windows and Linux.

it's the same as it has been for years:

1. Want just werks Wayland? Gnome. It's mutter compistor has had most nvidia support work done.

2. Want just werks x11? anything but KDE. kwin hates nvidia.

Nvidia is only GPU series that have GPUs with 100% Free Software (libre) firmware and driver. Intel has those too. AMD is only GPU series that has 100% proprietary firmware. Also even if you think about only the proprietary drivers, the quality of Nvidia's drivers are really good while AMD's drivers crashes and has many bugs all the time.

Funny how it's easier to go full freetard with Nvidia than it is with AMD, Trisquel for example actually works better with Nvidia cards than AMD ones because the Nouveau driver at least has some (limited) hardware acceleration whereas AMD cards and APUs are stuck with software rendering.

My current experience with nvidia is that it only seems to work well on x11. On KDE Wayland, it breaks adaptive sync at any refresh rates above 240hz and it shows desktop artifacts and weird garbage on screen every now and then and with GNOME I'm getting the same garbage on screen, but HDR is the thing that doesn't work properly.
Also having no software to do undervolting is absolute ass. On AMD this is much easier done with LACT. Having an nvidia GPU regrettably made it to where I'm not using linux anymore other than for testing shit out.

If I cannot use HDR, there's no good nvidia experience on linux.

atrocious. If you find a working setup, be sure to never change or update anything.
shit will just stop working with some updates, comfyUI being a blatant example. Memory leaks are everywhere and if you're unfortunate enough to get those, there is no easy fix.

Nvidia on Windows barely works let alone Linux
