App Stores and software repos are superior because they're tailored towards your particular system and all the legit stuff is in one place. When hunting down exes you have to know which is the genuine version and which is fake. You're responsible for manually updating all software and it can take a while even on modern systems. Updates via app stores and software repos are quick and you can do them unattended.
This installation method is so bad in fact that many software vendors have to patch it up with built in auto update and other functionality that should be there by default.
You should only ever install specialized software like this that can't be in a repo for some reason, the bulk should come from the repo. Or an App Store. Even Microsoft agrees this installation method is dumbshit and is trying to fix it despite its retarded users resisting every good change MS makes and embracing every shitty one.
