They don't. They had to scale down and shut down some projects because of the lack of funding.
They also changed license to AGPL because corpos screwed them over.

The scaling down is good, however, because it really was resource intensive to run, so focusing on getting it cheaper is long overdue.

How is this a problem in 2025 when IRC has existed since forever with minimal overhead, is it truly meaningful to do this or are they just reinventing the wheel ?

You cant even keep a channel per default, but have to run a bot (ChanServ) to not have some random dude hijack it accidentally.

You also can't leave your computer for 5 mins because it will disconnect randomly even if you haven't had a real network outage for past 5 years.
