I don't work on that level, but Natron and Blackmagic Fusion are on Linux, so the actual compositing part is already mature. There's also a bunch of fire effects you can download for Blender.

Again, I don't work on that level, but if I were to do it, my workflow would be the same between Windows and Linux: render the fire effect in Blender with a transparent background, import it into Natron, and use an effect to make the compositing more convincing.
