if you have money to burn, why not?

intel going away is bad now amd has a monopoly on cpu and making cpus is near impossible. Were fucked.

And I give you the answer: no

First of all, you should consider that Threadripper and Epyc are the same cpu, the same company but also literally the same hardware.

Then you should wonder: should I buy a Threadripper or an Epyc? The answer simply depends on what you want to build:

High end Workstation -> Threadripper
HPC server -> Epyc

Whatโ€™s the difference? In the socket and form factor that will force you to chose one mobo over another. For a workstation you have needs that are different from a server. Also, itโ€™s common to have two sockets mobo for epyc, with 8 ram channels per slot it takes quite a lot of physical space. Also think at the 120x pci-ex channels and the space they take.

You should also consider energy dissipation. You need high quality materials for both, but server can afford much noisier setups.

thats the crux of the matter
format factor is irrelevant for me
so i guess the answer for me would be to go with a dual setup epig for more ram throughput
i use gpus to do heavy lifting anyways, like our patriarchs did.

now that you made me give a fink i really wanna dual epig now
not only for the ram
but also infinity pcie lanes
better temp dissipation
maybe funky stuff with virtualization and such

i wanna try it now
this sounds like alot of fun

Luckily we're all too poor to afford this and will get access to this tech when the prices come down.

now I just need roughly 400 gb of ram and I'll have the perfect gentoo desktop

Compiling software for distro. Encoding video/audio. Editing video/audio.

I always have a use for more cores, more CPU, and more RAM. If only they still offered dual-socket options in their consumer line of CPUs. I'd buy them+eatx motherboard+tons of RAM right now and have no need for a new PC for the next 25 years.

It would probably be good at mining Monero but I'm not sure that it'd be more effective than just buying a bunch of regular CPUs, although those also require their own motherboard and supporting infrastructure. Would be interesting to see the hashrate from that.
