Most people don't do that. Not non-technical people anyway. Most public facing gpts are shit at anything not related to dated processing or code. The vast majority of people just use it as a slightly better version of Google's "AI overview" (ie Google but better...kinda) but very few talk to it like a person ALL day. Even with detailed and strict system prompts (you can set a persistent one with chat GPT and it actually works well) it's "personality" it's far to sanitized and predictable to even be a good pretend "friend"

Dude, I get your concern but you were not smarter than anyone else because you don't have to use it. I know you're not trying to give that impression, but you all THINK that because you were that one annoying kid in school that wanted to be different. AI brainwide is a genuine concern but you exaggerate just how many people try to use it as a friend of brain substitute. Even with very strict, detailed system prompts they suck ass at anything not related to data processing, summarizing, or code. /aicg/ and /ldg/ anons will confirm. Your dad likely uses it for light research orchest explaining niche complex topics but nothing more. I am not ai AI Evangelist but this "everyone who uses AI is a drooling low iq worm" sentiment is just as obnoxious as the " AGI IN TWO MORE WEEKS!!!" grift

No it causes people that already had pre-existing mental health issues to go insane. Remember that kid that killed himself because "The AI told him to"? Do you likely to have shaped parents that exacerbated or ignored his mental issues. Then when he died they were able to use AI as a scapegoat. Don't even halfway decent or halfway will adjusted person would end their own life because a glorified autocomplete front end "told him to". I agree the chatbot may have accelerated the inevitable but that kid was already pretty fucked. I'm sure you won't listen, but don't fall for sensationalism

They're usually women who think AI is some magical entity and are primed to become even more dependent on it
If you take AI seriously in a conversational sense, by default you are an insane(ly dumb) person

I never expressed that sentiment. I have used it to explain some complex topics that I have trouble understanding from the documentation and material I have access to. My post was more about people who literally chat to it all day or have an over-reliance on it because of a refusal to read longer form information or even test through trial and error.

Relying on AI fundamentally clashes with deep work and deep understanding.

It is what it is. The popular ideas put into your head about hating technology, ai, are just product of decades long propaganda media controlled by elites pushed towards people. It happened sometime around early 2010s when the media targeted tech companies.

ChatGPT + Websearch is better or most searches. Perplexity can give better results than ChatGPT + Websearch at time

But both are better than google search

I think part of the rate of use depends on how much new information you need to integrate at each point in your life. I'm studying for a PhD at the moment and myself and my peers use it very often, because there's so much new information we need to understand.
Once someone makes it to industry, they probably have less of a need for new information, and more of a need for deep understanding of topics they already somewhat know about. For them, AI is likely to be less useful.

It's free and doesn't require sign up, so just try it. They probably work very similarly because they both act as RAG on search results.
