This, my fellow cashiers at the grocery store dare each other to scan the backs of our retinas when we play "truth or dare" and we also use them to play "laser tag" with each other by aiming at the other cashier's eyes.

When you "scan" your eyes with the hand scanner, you sometimes get a random bar code that the system somehow recognizes, (like my friend "Peaches" who got her nickname from the 24 ounce can of her eponymous fruit) but it's less than like 1% chance, so you gotta do it like over a hundred times in a row to accidentally "catch" a "bar code" inside your eyeballs.

Nobody has ever harmed their vision doing this in the seventeen years I've worked here.

you can scan barcodes, it reads them and prints numbers, acts like a keyboard
most of those need to be configured for certain types of barcodes (there are many)

not familiar, but sure you'll find something just google brand and model and read the manual
most scanners like these use EAN128 barcodes. At least here in EU but it's pretty universal standard sure you'll get it to scan
then basically have notepad open, or excel and scan > you'll get a number
if it starts with 54 it's made in belgium (dunno other countries)

oh and they are 'programmed' by scanning special barcodes, so you need the manual

Assistant cashier here, this guy is correct. I estimate the approximate chance for a successful scan at 1.71%. Just make sure you scan both of your eyes for optimum results.
