I just upgraded from i7 10700k to 7800x3d, and Iโ€™m not sure I like the temps. Iโ€™m idling at 35-40c but it randomly spikes to 50ish whenever I open a browser or do anything basic. The fans also go loud. Itโ€™s super annoying. I have a phantom spirit 120SE as my cooler. I already reseated the thermal paste and everything and itโ€™s still spiking.

Is there any way to remedy this? Or is this cpu loud and hot?

Sounds like you're using Windows.

But what you're describing is part of the reason why undervolting X3D units is so popular.
Do you have PBO turned on? Or any of the other vendor-specific things (like Gigabyte's 'X3D Turbo Mode', etc).

Can't remember what it's called, but Windows has something similar to Linux cpu governors. Adjusts how hard/fast the cpu boosts.

You can also adjust your fan curve, add a delay/smoothing function so the fans don't ramp up immediately.

50c isn't a major spike, even for an air cooler, what about under load?

The 7800X3D is designed to boost to 85C and hold whatever clocks it can when it is at that temp. It is always going to try to boost to 85C. That's how AMD built it. If you don't like it you have to turn on eco mode.

That seems a bit high.
What ambient temps? And what kind of cooler, paste/TIM, case, and OS?

My 5800x would do the same. Same cooler too. My 9800x3d runs much cooler and doesn't ramp up the fans loading youtube, though I haven't touched OC settings besides enabling EXPO.

I'd rather the temp spike for a second to finish a task faster than to have a powerful CPU only to gimp it.
