>explain this <years> gap
I hate this shit like you wouldn't believe. If the experience you need for the job is before the gap makes sense asking for clarifications for ensuring if the knowhow is still present and up to date but if the experience is unrelated mind your fucking business. Why should i explain to some HR harpy that, for example, i had to take a year for supporting a sick relative or any other intimate reasons?

i dont think gaps really matter to anyone who actually work on the team. but therein lies the trick: here's how a team lead approaches hiring
>"oh fuck oh fuck we really need someone who can automate our testing ok damn this guy is perfect lets fucking go"
meanwhile the HR harpies are like
>"uhhhh jim said we need someone who has experience with "testing" well idk what that means so i will instead judge his personality based on a detailed recollection of the past 20 years of his life"

Blame "Ban the Box", which prohibits companies from asking if you have a criminal history. The assumption is that if you have an unexplained employment gap, you were in prison. Unless they're a bank or have reason to require a security clearance, in many states it's illegal for them to ask about or search for any criminal history. It's also another reason to prefer visa holders over domestic labor since visa holders cannot have criminal convictions.

Same. I got cancer so I had a 2 year gap and I got absolutely tortured for it in the job search despite having half a decade of experience in actual research. At one point I just snapped mid interview when HR insinuated it was an indicator I may be unsuitable because even after having explained it was due to cancer, the gap indicated "poor work ethic."

Yes, apparently putting any sort of prioritization of your private life ahead your work history is "poor work ethic". You're not supposed to work for a living but living for a work.

False equivalence, nobody asks if you can tie your own shoes because it's a fucking worthless question to ask, so apparently is asking for resumee gaps using your own logic.

The decision to create this stress is 100% coming from companies, armchair psychiatry is not a hiring metric.

Oh Anon! As if people like that even get interviewed. All he had to do was have lunch with someone who pitched him the job, say yes, and then he was in. Jesus christ, do you actually apply for jobs where you don't know someone? Those are all either fake postings to cover for the above scenario, or it's the shitwork no one wants to do at the company.

I wish you good luck anon
My situation is worse, I'm now back into job hunting with an 8 year gap, due to multiple reasons (serious health issues caused by an autoimmune disorder, taking care of elderly relatives, crippling depression). I do have lots of documentation and medical reports that can prove my physical and mental health issues. I'm not in burgerland and in my country they can check if I have a criminal history, heck, I'm still in touch with my former employer (which I left in good terms) if they want a reference.
But I guess most HR just see that 8-year gap and throw the resume away.
