Think about it; Why dox yourself to Google just to get an email address when you can just self host your own mail server?
>hurrr durrr your emails wont go through!!!! you're gonna get flagged!

Set up the correct SPF/DKIM/dMARC and they won't.

Why give Discord your phone number when you can just self host XMPP and Mumble?

>whos gonna move to xmpp and mumble???
Any single one of your friends who also recognizes the centralization problem.
If your friends don't recognize that problem, then they're retarded. There are plenty of people to find that do.

Why use social media when you can make your own website and forum?

>whos gonna use my dead fucking website??
Anyone who believes in having a vast and open Internet and isn't afraid to leave the Bubble of Google.

Why play on Steam servers when you can self host servers for games that don't require their accounts, and pirate them if need be as well?

>whos gonna play on my fucking server????
Your aforementioned friends. Minecraft servers, especially cracked ones are a very good example of this, along with Xonotic and others. Steam is a proprietary platform that has declined in performance, optimization and overall quality when it comes to its client, but it is heiled as the backbone of Linux because of Proton, which is difficult to use on its own without complying with the Steam and their TOS.

Is this not a good approach to the internet? What does /g/ think of this website that does exactly that?

You should move on to the next step and self-host your own imageboard too.

That's how the Internet has always worked, though.. When you become the dedicated server is when you are in the best position to host.

You have the right idea anon. I self host my own gopher hole and I frequent a BBS over ssh. Basically any odd protocol will provide a normalfag filter and the internet will start to resemble the internet of old.

Good to know there are others out there that share this sentiment. Not sure why self hosting is a thing that's so frowned upon in modern /g/ outside of a select few people..

The internet has been transformed from a place you can create to a place you consume.
That being said, what i have been thinking about is a Fidonet clone and using that as a backend for an image board or a BBS inspired by 4chan.
It would be slow but you could "federate" image boards the same way bbs's share message boards.
Different people would host a local server and every so often the servers would synch posts and that way people across the different image boards would be able to read each others posts.
Sadly I don't think many people are interested in this obsolete type of software.

Hyphanet needs to do one thing to bring me in:

Clone the opennet code into a third network mode, call it onionnet.
In onionnet, replace all instances of IP addresses to onion addresses.
Replace or encapsulate all UDP into TCP.

There is no reason it has to be IP addresses to do path folding. Onion addresses would work just fine. Why won't hyphanet do this?

>why give google/discord/discord/<other platform> your mere phone number
>just location, number, full name, credit/debit institute, ip, and access log dox to half a dozen service providers for your domain, dedicated servers, developer friends, and so on.
You're not le coolkidz running le secret underground forum, and that's ok. Ironically, the old fags you're trying to emulate would near selfdox all the time in order to humble brag about everything in their 19-23 year old life.

>Any single one of your friends who also recognizes the centralization problem.
which is it? a centralization problem or "i piss my pants over a few important services having my number"-problem?

>>105994322
>That's how the Internet has always worked, though
and that's why you're a faggot for pretending like offering your phone number or name is the end of the world.

You sound like a 12 year old discovering no-ip and .tk for the first time.

I should have known that someone else would have thought to create a federated image board.
Is anyone familiar with the protocol it uses, activity pub, or this project?
The example website doesn't load for me but I might have to try and set up an instance. Although it would probably be a good idea to disable images, too many people will post CP

Both look like something interesting to self host.

Find a vps that unblocks email ports and has ips that arent flagged then use https://github.com/LukeSmithxyz/emailwiz I think luke still has a video guide if needed but he recommends vultr and they suck. He also recommends epik as your domain registrar but I personally recommend namecheap (but it might make following his guide difficult if youve never hosted a website before)
