No, this is the wake-up call to install Linux instead of an obsolete OS which doesn't get support for any kind of software whatsoever.

My mum's Windows 7 computer had become part of a botnet crawling the Google search engine.

From experience I'm not even sure the desktop will show up, due to the proprietary toolchain rot.

Mint cinnamon and xfce version kept crashing for me.
Fedora xfce crashes a lot less.
Fedora kde really does crash a lot.
It is a good pain.

I have a theory that nostalgia for old shitty operating systems is driven by the version of the internet we experienced alongside them. I remember what Windows 7 improved upon versus previous versions. But I also remember all the times it fucked up on me and the shit I had to go through to troubleshoot it. It's not better than my experience running Windows 10 LTSC. It's not better than my experience after I switched to Linux either. I think most of the people whining are just too retarded to know how to manage their own machines. Some of them lost their ability to learn anything new a long time ago. I can install XP or 7 but it won't bring back what was actually great about the days when they were my OS of choice. The websites, the active IRC channels, when /b/ wasn't just a porn dump. That's what I want back. Not this shitty bug ridden abandoned corporate slop.

No. There are plenty of Linux apps with CUI-style GUIs that I never used on Windows XP and still prefer to the ones that are designed to look like smartphone apps.

Your computer is firewalled with your ISPs router, therefore a random smb botnet has no attack surface to exploit a device with Windows 7, you fear-mongering linux commiepedotroons.

Software from Windows 7 era still works fine and it mogs modern linux FOSS troonware. This applies even to Windows XP. There are plenty of ported browsers and some nuprograms as well. You also have VxKex that can make many modern programs work fine.

I use Win7 and Mint regularly! And by regularly I mean my Win7 laptop has been used for a project almost every day over the last few months, and every couple weeks for the last several years.

How safe are these browsers though? And by who maintains them?

Most of them are based on relatively up to doot chromium/gecko, but it doesn't matter unless you are individually targeted.
>And by who maintains them?
r3dfox is maintained by eclipse guys, meanwhile supermium is maintained by literallywho furfags, but I really couldn't care less.

No, it's also genuinely that 7 is MUCH pleasanter to use than 10. I had to start using 10 again recently, as need current year Chrome. It's nice that it's on a (nominally) faster machine (that 7 was no longer supported on) and I can finally use some hardware gizmos I'd bought and forgot as didn't work on 7, Stream Deck thing, etc. But irl, it's slower, every fucking thing gets in your way, everything useful has been replaced by some shitty app and it's just an inferior non fucking comfy OS.
