Although, technically, AppImage exists and is pretty much this. Not a lot of software is using it though.

what an irony, i would say it's vice versa, as macos is missing normal package manager, that's why it has brew

Poop shop looks very nice but I remember it working a bit poorly and being a resource hog. Though working a bit wonky is what I've had with Discover too. No experience with Gnรถme store

All these app stores are incredibly poorly maintained. Most packages are uploaded by third parties and are outdated as fuck. To be fair though, App Store on the Mac has the same problems with outdated stuff and poor catalogue.

linux can absolutely make you mount a disk image that then has some weird file structure to make a specific background appear and hide all chrome and put two icons in specific places to try and make a salvageable user experience out of a total hackjob that has no right to exist in any os at all

Literally just tested on that Steam AppImage on Linux Mint, you double click it and... it just does nothing. No indication of anything being wrong. You have to allow execute permissions and only then does it work. It might be an AppImage specific thing. Who knows.

>why not just use the steam .deb file!!!1!

The AppImage has several fixes that Valve doesn't implement and is more performant.

It's a method of installing apps on the Mac. When you download a .dmg file and double click on it, that dialogue box pops up. Drag the icon to the folder and your application is installed. Done.

Meanwhile on Linux some scary text flies by at super high speed while the magic stuff happens, though that's all handled in the background on modern distros.

Fuck you, your grandma called not because she needs some dumb softwae but because she'd like to hear her grandson's voice. Least you could do is pay the old lady a visit, install her software, kissh er cheek and eat her home baked cookies.

I have both, and Linux is less work in most cases.

Mac:
1. look up app and download .dmg from website
2. open finder and locate file
3. mount .dmg
4. drag icon to applications folder

Linux:
1. open software manager
2. search for app
3. click install

Absolutely false, if terminal use is implied.
Takes 2 seconds in a file manager to check "can run as executable".

And whether it's necessary in the first place is going to depend on your distro.
At some point we may have a .appimage package manager which removes even the need to download .appimage files.

Mac apps are distributed as virtual CDs that you install the app from.
It was clever 30 years ago but now it's just annoying.
