It keeps happening because you're a retard who doesn't know what the word "warranty" means.

New monitor is Lenovo Legion R24e and my previous was msi optix g273. If I use 180hz on lenovo my screen goes black periodically, every 2 seconds or so. My display doesn't turn itself off, it still has power, it feels more like my OS can't sort of support it (Ubuntu). I use a brand new 2.1 hdmi cable as well

Have you noticed IPS bloom on them?

This might help you see if everything is set up properly.

Weirdly enough, my DP cable (1.2?) works at 180hz? How does that make any sense? They even said on the site that 180hz was supposed to work with HDMI. Maybe Linux is acting up?
>Have you noticed IPS bloom on them?
Tons on the MSI monitor, have had bad experiences with MSI in general

You can try an EDID dump. That might help you know if the monitor's measured specs match up with the advertised ones. I know a program, but it might be Windows only. If you search the web, you might be able to find an EDID dump guide for Linux.

Bespoke high refresh rates are usually sold with a heavy asterisk. My monitor sold as "165Hz" states it's an overclock that may not actually work correctly.
I ended up running it at 120 anyway since it's divisible by 24 and 30.

make sure you have the appropriate full speed cable. Could be not enough bandwidth. Only time I saw flickering on and off is with shitty dell docking stations for laptops

Ok ya. You can't do that. HDMI is dogshit and if your GPU, Cable or Monitor cannot do HDMI 2.1 with FRL, it will be shit. TDMS is the old fashioned, lower performance DVI-D signalling mode. Basically sounds like the Jews didn't want to pay for the FRL docs, or whatever patents it entails, and you got fucked as a normie consumer who couldn't possibly know how Judaic HDMI is. Sorry anon. Stick to DisplayPort if you can...

if you are using an nvidia 5k series gpu it could be the drivers.

nvidia drivers for 5k series have been DOGSHIT. basically any new monitors using dp 2.1 or hdmi 2.1 suffer from flickering or hz issues and/or vsync/gsync issues. especially with multimonitor setups

basically you are fucked until nvidia fixes their drivers. enjoy.

Human eye can't see more than 60hz, double it to 120hz to follow Nyquist–Shannon's theorem and the result is that 120hz is enough

Do you know of ways to check the abilities of the GPU, monitor, and cable prior to buying other than contacting the manufacturers, checking manuals, or viewing the monitor's EDID dump?

You fell for the DSC, panel OC, and manufacturer-supplied cable memes; probably HDMI and VRR too.
Congrats!

Do you know if there's a way to find out if a panel was overclocked before buying?
