I'm planning on buying some kind of security camera to check on my grandma from time to time but i don't know where to start. Anyone got any experience with something similar?

feels kinda invasive... cant you give her an apple watch and use that? vitals + gps location should be all you need, plus its all wrapped up in a nice plausibly-deniable gift that is earnest (the watch)

i suppose youll depend on her remembering to charge it...

I unironically really like how easy ubiquiti security cameras are to setup/access remotely.

Also their AI cameras are great for tracking specific people/animals, so if you just want to quickly find anytime a certain person showed up on your cameras, you can just filter for that. Biggest downside to the AI cameras are their price though.

They also offer super stalker cameras if you really want to spy on your neighbours (pic related, 4k AI cameras with 31x optical zoom)

I went through hell trying to find an IP camera that did not upload to some dodgy chinese server and require you to use an app to view.

I ended up using a web camera and a linux cli tool called motion.

I could set up a system to view it remotely but it would be software driven.

This>>106002287 They're great to use for checking up on people and lots of nursing homes use them as modern ones are pretty advanced these days with things like fall detection(which is really needed for old people), face detection, people description(old, baby, wearing a mask), and so forth, and can come in at a decent price range, for just one camera.

While they do come with some amazing features, you may also want to pick up a bit on network security as all IP cameras are easy a shit to hack and make for huge targets. They're basically computers with a camera attached. If you want to check your cameras online and away from home, its best practice to put them behind a VPN and always have your camera traffic behind a VPN and possibly on a separate network. This should be common practice for anything you need to access away from home. You don't need to pay for a VPN to do this either.

I'll look into them, though i'd rather do without AI or added up services though, still will look into them
>>106002398
I'd need to share this with some other non-morbidly obese family members (i use arch btw) so i think trying to convince them of using a linux setup is a good idea.

Lol jesus, according to the specs sheet that thing should be able to zoom in like half a fucking kilometer while retaining high enough quality to identify people.

NTA, but the ubiquiti AI cameras use local AI not a cloud based thing.

They do local AI on their AI cameras, they also sell an add-on device that will do local AI features for their non-AI cameras, but it does the AI stuff after the fact, so it isn't live, it takes awhile to process the AI tagging, whereas the cameras they sell WITH AI do it live so the moment someone shows up the camera identifies them and tags them.

So for example, if you wanted to know everytime a specific person leaves the house you can have an AI enabled camera watching a doorway with a digital zone marked where the door is so the moment the camera sees that person walk through the door it sends you an alert.

I know someone who uses this for their mother with dementia.

I know someone else who uses the AI cameras for door access at their office, anytime it detects a registered user it unlocks the door automatically.

Obviously could be complete overkill for your specific use-case, just saying the AI features aren't just a meme.

Yeah as i said (>>106002587) it's more about not bloating up the price with features i don't need. The idea here is to be able to check from time to time that she hasn't fallen or that she's getting out of bed.

Do you love your memaw? Then go here:

Watch some tutorials on how to flash Thingino from 'WLTechBlog', then find a camera that suits your needs and budget. If you don't, you memaw will be spied on in her sleep tonight, and every night. Go ahead and thank me.

And AI cameras will actually alert you if someone is falling. Its a niche feature that's otherwise used widely in hospitals, nursing homes, and elderly care. AI cameras don't even cost that much either since the software itself is easy to implant from simple updates. The real costs comes from the actual hardware these modern cameras have.

Also not trying to sell you on getting AI camera, its just when dealing with the elderly. They are a life changer.

That's like an old feature too. Like the other anon said, AI in security cameras aren't the same as the meme AI you've been seeing recently. AI cameras have been around publicly since 2010 I believe or at least that's when I first learned of them when I went shopping around for security cameras.

I'm always impressed whenever I update mine too because they usually add some new cool AI feature/technology I never knew I wanted. If this was like some jew company like Apple, they'd force me to buy a whole new camera just to change the brightness.

Wyze. They're cheap and they work. The app is decent. You can have 2 in every room of her house for under $500.

If you want big boy cameras Axis is gold, HikVision is silver, and everything else is a chink knockoff.

I use this software called frigate to manage a few cameras at my grandma's place. It's compatible with a pretty wide range of cameras. It's a bit of a pain to set up, since you've got to type out the settings in a text based configuration file, and the documentation could be better, though chatgpt does a decent job at getting you most of the way there.
>>106002398
Any camera you can probably afford is gonna talk to some Chinese server if you let it. The best way to avoid that is to firewall it off with your router settings. Manage the cameras with some kind of server on your local network, could even be a raspberry pi or some kind of SBC. Use that to monitor the streams, and block the cameras from talking to the Internet directly. If you can deal with not having remote monitoring, you could go full CCTV and run everything on an air gapped network.

>Is there any Android app like frigate?
Frigate is a server that runs object detection and manages recordings. Why would you run that on Android? You'd need to keep your phone always connected to your cameras 24/7 and probably connected to storage (unless you want to use the phone's internal storage for your security footage).

What you do is you run Frigate on a small server locally (you can even do in on a raspberry pi if you buy the google AI accelerator thingy for $30 and don't have too many cameras, though if you can get a used mini-pc it's a bit better). Then you expose the camera streams from Frigate and use something like wireguard to tunnel into the local network and watch the streams.

It does take a bit of setup and networking skills to get right. But once you do, it should be perfectly usable for your family.

>Is there an android app like frigate
It integrates with another software called home assistant, which does have an android app. You need to run home assistant on the same computer you're running frigate, and link the two together, then you can set up your home assistant app on your phone to talk to the server and view the streams remotely.
