Is it better to have a recovery mail or a phone number for 2fa on shitmail? I have an old gmail account that I no longer use, and I want to remove my phone number from it. Instead, I’m considering creating a new throwaway ProtonMail account with random numbers and letters for 2fa. Is this a viable and secure approach or do I risk to lose that gmail account in case I want to access to it again?

nowadays it really doesn't matter too much if you print recovery codes. I'm pretty sure those bypass all MFA.
