What is the purpose of MATE still existing in 2025? Why would you not just use the rat?

I would use mate instead of xfce but the last time i checked it (in a vm to be fair) installing and applying certain themes inadvertently sends the bars into oblivion.

I always thought the opposite: it was gnome under the hood with all of its gnomery, but the least ammount of outer shell was meant to be traditional desktop metaphor instead of whatever windows 8 clusterfuck they wet for in gnome 3.
