Whatever happened to all the hype RISC-V was generating a couple of months ago?

It died down since hype is inherently consumerist and RISC-V isn't laid out for that. I'm still using my RISC-V board tho.

I don't understand what makes this ISA better than other RISC-based ISAs like ARM or MIPS. Does it just come down to the fact that you don't need to purchase a license to use patented, IP designs from guys like ARM?

That would it yes; there is nothing special about the ISA itself, the lack of license fees is RISC-V's main reason for existing.

Everybody is waiting for the new boards with the full vector spec and some other shit. No point buying outdated stuff.

But also it's still just a CPU, can do the same shit with an ARM board or x86 or whatever.

China could just tell ARM corporation "fuck you, we're not paying any more fees. good luck" and then keep churning out bootleg ARM processors anyway. But they don't.

It requires extension even for basic things, so fragmentation can be burden for the future of the desktop adoption of RISC-V.

it's following the hype
llvm and gcc are supporting it better, and more and more software packages build for it
the foundation is there for it to be the future

I don't like risc-v, it's too RISC. ARM and x86 are nice to write asm for because you have instructions that do lots of operations in one, which means your code is smaller. ARM is essentially just CISC but with no operations "directly" on memory values.

>>106014016
>they wouldn't be able to sell them anywhere
They don't need to "sell them anywhere", they can just put them into devices that they make and export. No one is opening up devices and checking part numbers (and even if they did, they can print a fake part number, which they already do for a lot of stuff).
>>106014036
I dunno, don't remember anything about it.

>>106011254
it's better because it has no licenses. anyone can build these chips.

>>106013859
arm has exact same problem. not all arm cores are exactly the same. this is what happens when you're allowed to pick and choose what goes into your core. it's no longer the 1970s.

>because you have instructions that do lots of operations in one
risc-v is.. risc. same abilities, dumb cunt.

it serves as a tool to facilitate global equilibrium in tech development, if you don't have to be at the whims of cuckmerican globohomo corporations in order to secure a core it's a much better thing. and instead of having some ancient ass ISA you have state of the art stuff with extensions suited for modern usecases.

yeah, it "works" by allowing lazy hardware designers to just say "the compiler will do everything, no need to worry". then you end up with itanium 2.0

I have the impression it's growing behind the scenes, especially in china and probably in the data center. Low-power/cost microcontrollers too. Nvidia are porting cuda to risc-v

Yup, tons of Chinese semi designers are working on risc-v stuff. Like this company, WCH, who made the infamous CH341 USB to UART adapter on all the Arduino clones.
