Think about it; Why dox yourself to Google just to get an email address when you can just self host your own mail server?
>hurrr durrr your emails wont go through!!!! you're gonna get flagged!

Set up the correct SPF/DKIM/dMARC and they won't.

Why give Discord your phone number when you can just self host XMPP and Mumble?

>whos gonna move to xmpp and mumble???
Any single one of your friends who also recognizes the centralization problem.
If your friends don't recognize that problem, then they're retarded. There are plenty of people to find that do.

Why use social media when you can make your own website and forum?

>whos gonna use my dead fucking website??
Anyone who believes in having a vast and open Internet and isn't afraid to leave the Bubble of Google.

Why play on Steam servers when you can self host servers for games that don't require their accounts, and pirate them if need be as well?

>whos gonna play on my fucking server????
Your aforementioned friends. Minecraft servers, especially cracked ones are a very good example of this, along with Xonotic and others. Steam is a proprietary platform that has declined in performance, optimization and overall quality when it comes to its client, but it is heiled as the backbone of Linux because of Proton, which is difficult to use on its own without complying with the Steam and their TOS.

Is this not a good approach to the internet? What does /g/ think of this website that does exactly that?

I thought about it but it's not worth dealing with hackers, I know some people who tried and it was painful dealing with them

hackers is a broad term anon, what did these mysterious hackers do to these people and did these people make their shit from scratch or did they use whatever onions shit they found for 'top frameworks to host on windows' and called it a day?

Not OP buy I think it's abhorrent I can pay for a product and a company can make money off my data in perpetuity simple as.
If you're using a free service I understand but not when I paid $300+ for something

I don't know because I'm not much of a tech guy to know the details but everything that could possibly be hacked was hacked or attempted multiple times eventually they just gave up and shut everything down

Again I'm not a tech guy something about getting into the servers and taking control, exploits with the actual programs on website, trying to get user data, dealing with uploading malicious files and other things

I'm literally hosting an XMPP server for years at this point, nobody ever writes anything to me there. There are no interesting MUCs there either, somehow IRC is more alive than the whole of XMPP

I might consider hosting both XMPP and IRC and bridging the two together via Matterbridge. Is it a good idea?

Do you have a website that you're hosting the XMPP server alongside with?

I don't know, I used to host Biboumi (an IRC gateway for XMPP) and it worked fine, never used Matterbridge. Hosting XMPP and IRC should be fine, I think?
>website
Well technically yes, but it's just one page that says that this domain is for XMPP, served by nginx

xmpp won't work for public chat but I'm considering it for some people i know IRL.
The problem is all clients require CA signed certs and I refuse to give the lets-encrypt jews my data. Until selfsigned certs are usable xmpp is dead to me.

you can just hand them your self hosted email address and domain name, that's all they ask for.
