The only open source player in the FreeBSD based appliance market that homelab users might be exposed to now is pf/opnsense for networking. Even then I wonder if that has legs long term. FreeBSD/OpenBSD pf implementations have diverged very hard and now linux has nftables which are a lot less dogshit than iptables. That being said the only good Linux based router in a box is VyOS and even then the firewall component is not the primary design goal.
