I never understood why people showed off their UI like that, as if you EVER make your main focus window anything less than the full size of the screen. As as if anyone ever used those fucking weather gadgets, desktop clocks, or stupid pointless system monitors other than to look like a gormless wanker for a screenshot.

The language and runtime was garbage, yes, but nothing else ever had the level of RAD style development as VB6 did.
Its crazy to me that RAD is basically dead today outside of if you're using Delphi, which it self is mostly a dead language.

Not really on Visual C++, you can't edit an application mid run, doing things like adding entirely new functions, etc, and never actually having to restart things. VB6/5 could. Most RAD potion of Visual C++ is being able to edit the GUI on the fly but even that, depending on what you do may need a recompile.

I do miss the absurd amount of widgets that KDE 3 had. Was a lot of fun doing dumb shit like having a copy of Quake running in my taskbar. Was fun.

most environments have basically sane defaults so people can just work
back then i felt the need to rice and tweak because the defaults just weren't good enough
now defaults are good enough and while it's a shame we lost a lot of customizability, i think it's better for the average puter user
