The internet was cool since we could exchange communications and information with anyone around the world unconditionally.

All these /g/ threads are at a doom ath, so let's make a replacement.
What's another method we could use to unconditionally exchange communications and info to people on the other side of the planet?

Gopher? Gemini?
In my opinion the first step is to annihilate any way of using images. The second step is to make the alternative hard enough so most people can't just 'install and go'. Phone access being difficult would be a nice bonus.
Any alternative that meets this criteria should be a nice alternative but it will probably be empty.

Use the same protocols as we use now but with different domains. Get rid of the world wide web
The web you once knew and the current shitty one one run on the same technology and protocols

Big fan of Gemini here
But you have to convince people to make capsules
And those people have to be OK with shouting into the void and maybe they might get friendly email or hate mail or both from an email address that they put on their capsule

we need to bring back BBSes
start one
telnet into one
if you want an extra-local, ultra-sekrit club, do it over dial-up and get back to the roots

This. The difference is the people and the culture.
Sadly, there is no going back. The world you long for no longer exists. Such is life.

People have already mentioned Gopher and Gemini and both are great, I host my own phlog but its shit and no one cares about my adventures with a Performa 6290CD.
Anyways besides those two the big serious contender to the web is the good old fashioned BBS.
A good BBS can provide all types of services from file download to messaging and forums. You can self host them over the internet and even setup a dial-up server over VOIP if you want to break out the modem.
>but muh bbs is slow, to few people use it
well change that, faggot, find a board and use it daily. the more people do that the more active they will become.

Gnu-Net, Gemini, Dial Up (which while always slow you can put any protocol over), Ham Radio channels (which you can also put any protocol over)
Depends how much previous infrastructure you are allowing yourself to use.

I honestly think that the internet will be what is always has. The government/corporations are going to lock down the web/http and that will capture all the normalfags and 90%+ of the people.
The law makers don't know or care about gopher, irc, or a BBS. The biggest hurdle is getting people who are interested off the corporate slop machine and into making their own stuff.
Even if it is just something stupid like my gopher phlog you have to do it. Create something small regularly with all this obscure/forgotten tech and find others who think likewise.
