Windows XP is overrated, millenials just like it because it's one of the few things zoomers can't claim.

Back when XP just came out I remember being very bummed about the aesthetics of it all and felt a sort of impending doom feeling that soon the classic Win95/98 look will vanish and every computer will have this toy-like UI.

At least you could still set the redmond style up to W7.
If M$ brought back official support for changing the style I'd install it in a heartbeat. You literally only have to maintain 3 styles to win everyone over.
Simple (Redmond)
Elegant (Aero)
Modern (Metro)

Still use it as daily driver (Posready 2009) and everything, old and new, continues to work just as expected. It isn't a vanilla installation without updates, patches and tweks (obviously), but, you don't get this insane level of utility out of something that's just overrated.

I do agree on the toy gui, it's ugly as all hell and I switched back to 2000 classic as soon as I saw that thing.

What bugged me about the UI wasn't even the fisherpricery. It was that I couldn't change the colors like on 95/98. Thinking back, sure it'd require regenerating a ton of images at the desired color (a lot for that time, trivial now), but I saw that it would lead to locked down customizations. Sure, they sold lack adn gold, IIRC, but it's no longer "custom"ization when you're just selecting from the few options they're giving you.

>1994: "you want to set fonts to 72 pt in Wingdings in yellow, backgrounds in eye-searing pink, and buttons in blood red? sure thing, kiddo! knock yourself out!"
>2002: "we have all the colors you care to use: blue, silver, and green" (few years pass) "ok ok FINE you can have a different blue and a black theme, too. But remember, modifying skins is not allowed because you might hurt yourself."

Exactly! I once heard a business guy explaining how a manager in Coca Cola asked him to redo the whole thing because they wanted their indicators to be:
>Red = Coca Cola = good
>Green = puke = bad

It doesn't have to make sense, but if I can't even change the fucking color. And zoomers are loosing the ability to even understand colors. I was giving someone a ride and they were explaining, and we were about to get there, so I asked "what color is the house?" and all I got was the blank stare.

You could make 9x crash by just looking at it. Some things had to go for the sake of stability, and children playing with colors must have been like bottom of the list for developers.

I remember dad bought a CD with 500 (or some other "large" number) of images/cliparts/stock photos. I remember spending some afternoons just browsing the contents of that CD. In hindsight, it was probably worth him for the quiet he got from his kids.

Out of the blue (pun unintended), sure I expected them to think back and remember instead of having it on the tip of their tongues. They were busy thinking about the path, not the destination. But once they pictured the house inside their heads? Huh, maybe they were NPCs after all.

THIS.
How hard is it to get this on literally anything these days? It was expensive then and they did it, but now? It should be cheap. I believe some old WMs might have it, out of retro emulation like WindowMaker and the like, but why is it gone??
