Think about it; Why dox yourself to Google just to get an email address when you can just self host your own mail server?
>hurrr durrr your emails wont go through!!!! you're gonna get flagged!

Set up the correct SPF/DKIM/dMARC and they won't.

Why give Discord your phone number when you can just self host XMPP and Mumble?

>whos gonna move to xmpp and mumble???
Any single one of your friends who also recognizes the centralization problem.
If your friends don't recognize that problem, then they're retarded. There are plenty of people to find that do.

Why use social media when you can make your own website and forum?

>whos gonna use my dead fucking website??
Anyone who believes in having a vast and open Internet and isn't afraid to leave the Bubble of Google.

Why play on Steam servers when you can self host servers for games that don't require their accounts, and pirate them if need be as well?

>whos gonna play on my fucking server????
Your aforementioned friends. Minecraft servers, especially cracked ones are a very good example of this, along with Xonotic and others. Steam is a proprietary platform that has declined in performance, optimization and overall quality when it comes to its client, but it is heiled as the backbone of Linux because of Proton, which is difficult to use on its own without complying with the Steam and their TOS.

Is this not a good approach to the internet? What does /g/ think of this website that does exactly that?

Any and all posters who refuse to read and post the exact arguments that have already been responded to in the above should be ignored and considered shills.

if I selfhost a cam surveilance server but then use, say, hikvision cams. Do they phonehome if the server is connected to the internet?

Wouldn't know but you should try to block their servers via DNS

I'm not sure how I feel about cy-x. The admin seems autistic. Is it an ambitious project or will it fall into an exclusive niche? Do the jannies care if I say the N word?

The only way to make glowies stop spamming CP is to make it legal.
Take the extreme data-freedom pill. Legalize all data transfer. Criminalize only real-world behavior with harsher punishments.

i skipped straight to the point and determined this guy is retarded.
the whole point of self hosting media is so that you can take all of your pirated content wherever you go and not have to worry about legal problems. the future (now) isn't buying things that you can rip and lock up on a community server, it's streaming from some jeetslop site and receiving an encrypted copy that can only be used when the device confirms with some entity that the license is valid.
the future decentralized piracy, sharing, and keeping everything locked behind encryption from anyone who wants to know what you're doing.
nice of him to plug that ugly fuck geerling though. he does some fun youtube content.

Yeah, but then they can't plant CP on whoever they want anymore. CP is the new weed plant.

Eventually they'd redirect you to a guy that'd say "look, buddy, this plan is good enough for 99% of our customers. If you want that extra bling, can I interest you in our business plans for triple the price?"

I pay 2 dollars a month for a vps that handles my email + webmail client and cute website, a vpn, a search engine scraper. I also had a matrix dendrite server on there for my friends for awhile. its a good investment.
