So what's the point of these proprietary dongles then? If I wanted a laptop that only has built-in USB-C, USB-A, HDMI and/or DisplayPort then I could easily pick damn near any other laptop on the market.

The biggest problem is that the bottom isn't flush with the bottom of the laptop.
Though I bet they could fit it all into a standard module size if they got creative with multiple PCBs and used a mechanism for the jack to pop out like found in other laptops.

Ports must be exceedingly durable no for basically no one to get the point that the modules exist as basically sacrificial ports.
Instead of wearing out the permanently soldered port you just wear out the cheap module and can swap it easily when it wears out enough or is just broken.

It's more about not letting a minor thing ruin the functionality of an expensive device.
A port breaking for whatever reason shouldn't mean micro soldering or a full mobo replacement just to fix

Personally I can't say I've broken a port but I have zero clue of the limits. I baby the fuck out out of every single port on my devices and I really hate how twiddly USB-C is with these really stiff USB 3.2/ Thunderbolt cables.

Having ports be sacrificial would save me from this rigmarole of making sure there is no up and down or side to side strain on the port because It's not trivial to replace

This is the proper solution to the thinning laptop problem, for Ethernet ports. I remember ages ago I had a pcmcia modem card for an ancient laptop that had a slide-out where the cable plugged in vertically - also acceptable.

Why doesn't someone just invent a mini ethernet connector that can fit entirely in the frame of a modern thin laptop? It's just the plastic that has to be molded to a different shape, the metal contacts wouldn't have to be changed at all.

making the framework too small for an ethernet port shows that it never had real enthusiasts in mind. all they had to do was design the chassis from the largest port (ethernet) but it's trying to fool normies into being a macbook. it's style over substance
