Put any of these gamedev bros who haven't finished a single game in their life in a legacy hopital, naval and banking software system and they'll end their life in top 2 weeks.

This cult youtube circlejerk has gone too far. Now they're claiming they're writing databases and have their own conference.

Maybe like 2 decades ago now tards just do unity or unreal asset flips and call it a game, few people create custom engines anymore

If you are implementing your own database as game developer, you are doing something wrong...

I'm still waiting to see what casey has actually done besides host forums and grift e-courses.

I once heard he was rad-tools buildchain guy who wrote a new system in house, but if you look at all their leaks, you'll see they only ever shipped boring gaystation and pc makefile stuff.

This faggot does nothing but cargo cult what he thinks big companies are up to over "muh experts, muh proven product" argument, whilst simultaneously shitting on their chosen software suite for some easy "webdev bad"-iq takes.

[...] and were up to.

What gamedev takes does he have other than "i only know how to use d3d9 and opengl. read: constant immediate mode shilling" and braindead system programming takes from the 90s like "i must use inefficient ticket locks everywhere that reschedule like a nigger, because im too stupid to implement a real semaphore wait list... even though my dumbshit hello world project shouldnt need locks to begin with"?

Yes games can be complex. But most games get released fragile and unfinished, with bugs and crashing servers. And that is only possible because no one's life depends on it.

>"build databases, build systems, large asset management, etc"
He basically said "i serialized a hashmap of readdir entries because filesystems dont scale for arbitrary access of tens of thousands of files under one inode" 4 times in a row. Nobody in this griftosphere will ever call this faggot out on his shit, will they?

>superdomain
Ah, a classic boomoid take of pedantry. You can smell the hackernews on him. Who wants to bet he has a secret alt where he sperges out over whether or not a C++ is a super or subset of C as a technical argument?

>We make editors
Cool, show me your editor, faggot. Last time I checked the closest thing we got to a new editor is trenchboom, and that shits stuck supporting <2000 idtech releases. Everything else is nothing more than a glorified model viewer.

The "custom data format" in question is always just a zip file, or C data stored directly into a file, not a database

But it has a different filename suffix each time. That means, it is a new format!

i'm a game dev and agree with the general movement but i don't get why they make overreaching remarks and demand to be taken so seriously. idk if Casey even read the post, with how he responded. yes, it's complex software, but it's also non-critical and takes shape totally unlike what other industries demand by convention and requirement. the proper response to Gergely's post is "and?"

I mean most people at fagman are literally just configuring yaml for dIsTriBuTed sYsTemS. The hardest part is the interview. I worked there its true. Everything complicated was built 20-30 years ago.

it's not complex. unity editor is by far the most complex piece of the whole unity engine for example. just getting GUI layout right is probably more time consuming that writing vulkan backend.

some gamedevs make it harder for themselves by not using OOP, but that's another story.

you can look at flax engine if you want example. it's capable engine, but editor sucks.
there are dozens of rendering engines made by single guy, but none of them have good editor. if a single amateur dev can make a game engine then it's not that hard.

They're hilarious. I finally got around to trying out game dev using gpt to walk me through the steps. After getting advice that didn't come with a funny accent, I can safely say I finally understand why game devs don't get paid well.
This shit is childishly simple.
Half of what they're doing is just running some coroutines when colliders trigger. The hardest part is the art and visuals. And yet somehow they manage to fuck up the code constantly.

complexity doesn't necessarily denote difficulty. also complexity compounds ... so if you're saying one aspect (GUI) is complex then the whole must be-- that's part of the point of the argument.

Game engines are extremely complex but the game engines Blow and Muratori have created are indie pixel slop that aren't even comparable to AAA game engines from the early 2000s. The source code to Handmade Hero is widely available and there's absolutely nothing interesting or complex about it.

but most game developers fail to implement this aspect properly. this disproves OP argument. most gamedevs can't actually handle the complexity and barely scratch the surface of the "superset domain".

sure, i don't disagree with that. many are gluing libraries together, anyway. most developers across non-critical domains are incompetent... and making them better is the movement.

>Put any of these gamedev bros who haven't finished a single game in their life in a legacy hopital, naval and banking software system and they'll end their life in top 2 weeks
The irony is all of those institutions you mentioned have people called project managers and product managers who sole purpose is to make judgement calls about, " good enough" for release or enough to make money and take pain away.
The problem with software devs, why they're are NOT real engineers, and more importantly faggots is because they have no real restrictions and can endlessly refactor code trying to achieve perfection which is unattainable.
Not even embedded engineers have this problem and they're arguably a hybrid between electrical and software engineering.
What makes me excited for AI is the day that it is good enough to replace web dev fags and mot developers. Also eliminating India .
