Can we have a serious discussion about HDR that doesn't devolve into Anons calling each other poorfags? Do you like HDR? Do you think that SDR was good enough or that HDR tone-mapped to SDR was good enough?Where do you stand on HDR, Anon?

HDR is good and looks better when implemented well and annoying when it isn't.

If I post a picture of HDR off and on from my desktop, can you guys see it? Just so someone can see my HDR cause i genuinely think with HDR on my monitor looks worse

HDR is great. Even on average/bad monitors. Too few applications are colorspace aware and HDR at least bring the standard colorspace to something most, if not every, monitor is unable to achieve.
>but muh contrast
Contrast is the flashy thing that is easy to explain, accurate colors are better. Especially since great contrast is just as good in SDR as in HDR.

What's the point of posting HDR images and asking people who don't have HDR monitors to have an opinion on them?

If you're on Windows, I assume it's because you've set up the SDR brightness slider lower than how you normally use your monitor in SDR.
Or monitors can, in fact, be very much worse at doing HDR than SDR, but I must admit I didn't see a monitor where it was the case yet.

It just looks worse when it's on, I have to crank the brightness up to max for it have 80% of the brigthness my screen has with hdr turned off

I don't know the specifics of how it's working on Linux, or how your monitor is.
That said, if you like how SDR looks better, great. But unless you have a sRGB clamp (preferably on the monitor), it's possible that you're mostly seeing oversaturated colors.

Probably is, but it's better than seeing the realistic grays of HDR. I can compare it to choosing headphones that aren't as realistic and doesn't match what audiophiles think is good, but they're fun headphones

Nigger that's because you don't have real HDR monitor but some 400 nit shit (which isn't even HDR).
On real HDR monitor that's capable of 1000+ nit you would have HDR brightness at 20-30%
Don't bother, just turn it off, your display doesn't have HDR

for those who are interested/autistic enough to watch two hour presentation about HDR (output), I can't recommend this enough
https://yedlin.net/DebunkingHDR/index.html

don't be scared by the name "debunking HDR". it's not really about debunking, but rather well thought out talk about the inefficiency and misuse of HDR content by an accomplished cinematographer to other even more accomplished cinematographers, like Deakins.

You need a good monitor to see the difference. I don't own one, so to me, your pic looks like some dumb effects applied to left to increase contrast. I can't actually see the higher range.

But for SDR, I can clearly see banding on gradients with just 16-bit color depth and always wondered why they stopped dithering it.

I have never had a tv or monitor bright enough for it to work and it will be the same for 99% of normies. All it does is make the picture too dark. Since almost no one can use the tech its naturally a meme tech put together so they can mark up prices.

I like it when it works. I think the brightness is appreciated and only KDE knows how to make it work with SD content by having intensity settings to get a psudo HDR effect.

I don't really get the appeal of HDR, like the technology just doesn't make sense. If you make one part of the screen really bright say 2000 nits and the rest is 100 nits my eyes adjust and now the rest of the screen looks darker than it should. Wtf is the point of that?

It’s something that wayland claims they support.
Back in the analog days, we had this thing called a “contrast” knob which did the same thing. Welcome to 1985.

HDR is good but often done poorly
Most monitors can't display it well and look worse in their HDR mode than in SDR
A lot of games have broken HDR implementations, even major UE games
