Just make sure you do not buy one with an ionizer. It pumps ozone into your room and poisons your air. It used to be a popular "feature" that often went undocumented so it would be hard to know if your model even had it.

I just got the one everyone gets, the levoit one that's round and white. I regularly see higher capacity ones go on sale and am tempted to buy one but I just don't need one.
I did a mold test in my bedroom before I got an air purifier, and some mold appeared. Then after running the purifier for several weeks I did it again and nothing showed up on the test. to me that shows that it's doing something. I also get a lot of dust in my room for some reason so I take the filter out and blast it with pressurized air once in a while to keep it working efficiently.

I tried making the reddit one where you tape a filter to a box fan but it was too loud. The levoit is much quieter even at full speed and looks a lot better too. >>106111815 is right, avoid any with ionizing ability. I almost bought one before seeing it had something called "plasmawave" or some shit which is ionization.

Pretty much this, but you don't even have to go that far. Just attach one to the back with a piece of tape or elastic or something. Doesn't have to make a perfect seal, most of the air will have to pass through the filter regardless, and you can easily take it off to use the fan normally if you want. I've been doing this for years and judging by how the filters look when I replace them, it does a pretty good job.
Way cheaper than a meme air purifier that takes special filters that they'll stop making five years from now.

Air purifiers are a meme, because they are a perfect example of form over function. Specifically, 99% of the models sold on the market sacrifice purifying capacity for aesthetics. If you want a genuinely powerful purifier then you want something like pic related, an open-source design invented during the COVID pandemic that you can DIY at home and provides significantly more purifying capacity than almost all non-industrial models on the market for a fraction of the cost:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corsi%E2%80%93Rosenthal_Box

There are a number of companies selling Corsi-Rosenthal style kits you can assemble. There are also companies selling variants using computer cooling fans (which are significantly more energy efficient and quiet than larger fans).

Tl;dr: buy 4 standard 20x20x2 inch HVAC filters, set them up side by side in a square shape, stick a box fan on top, tape everything together with duct tape, plug in and purify.

Got a Coway AirMega 250 about a year ago and I'm quite pleased with it. Nothing more than a box and a fan with a HEPA (and a bit of activated carbon) filter. I have a cat and a cockatoo in my living room so quite a bit of dust and this thing helps cut down on the particulate matter. I no longer have a stuffed nose all the time. It's really quiet 95% of the time. Has an optical PM2.5 sensor to regulate its speed and that seems to work well. Sometimes when we're for example cooking without the fume hood on the indicator light goes red and it runs full blast until the air is clean again.
I particularly chose a model without an ionizer as that's bad for human health but especially for bird health.

Standard HVAC filters don't filter as much as a HEPA filter. Also those CR boxes are loud as fuck and look like the cobbled together shit that they are.
They aren't bad per se, and if you don't mind the drawbacks go for it, but I wouldn't put one in my living room.

Home ones have ppm sensor so they'll almost never run at full speed but ramp down depending how much stuff is floating in the air so they're near silent most of the time.

Air purifiers can't really get rid of fumes, they can get rid of particles. Also don't bother with HEPA, get something from:
https://www.etsy.com/shop/The3DHandyman
or
https://www.cleanairkits.com/

If you want to actually get rid of fumes/VOCs you need to use a fuckload, and I mean an entire fuckload of activated carbon/charcoal.

Something like this: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1687840516/model-b-charcoal-edition

However, the problem with this is the AC Infinity carbon filter is made more for hiding pot growing smells and exhausting outside. This means sometimes the charcoal they use will stink up your fucking house just as bad or worse than the fumes you are trying to get rid of.

So if you *really* want to use this, get the AC Infinity refillable canister, DUMP out the garbage and trash their shitty fucking 13% ash content carbon. After that, Rinse out the container relaly good.

Then fill it with this: https://buyactivatedcharcoal.com/buy-bulk-activated-charcoal/granular-activated-charcoal-coconut-4x8-mesh-acid-washed.html

(Yes the people who run this store are crazy religious nuts that close their website on the "TRUE Sabbath" or whatever dumb fucking shit, but it's the only place to source carbon this high quality for a good price without buying respirator grade carbon by the ton for tens of thousands of dollars.

Trust me, I spent literally weeks of my life researching this and getting quotes after AC Infinity's garbage shit stunk up my entire house so bad I had to rip out of carpet, fuckers.

Best deals on the filters themselves:

You need to buy "oversized" version, so exepect to spend 500-600$ or more to get something that pumps enough air, without making high noise. Basically something that's like AC4236/10 , or better.

I got one and do the same. It stays on low speed so it doesn't get all the dust but does pull a lot of it into the corner where the unit is. It'd probably work really well if I had it centrally located.
I like that it goes completely dark, too, unlike that crappy blueair I tried.
