So now that Thinkpad is ogre, what was the best one of them all? What was Lenovo's/IBM's swansong?

wide screens on laptops are pants on head retarded and only pushed because using them is cheaper since they get shat out so much compared to nowadays less produced 4:3 displays.

Honestly the best for its era was probably the t20 or one of the 700 series.

But the best of all time is probably the humble Sandybridge T420. Many factors go onto this though, including price and availability and parts. A lot of people think the X series is superior, and whilst I prefer to use them, the T is better for more uses.

Here we go talking about performance metrics and rare models.

> doesn't mention the x300/1 and w700 etc.

But I'm going to stand by the t420. It's an all time ubiquitous classic that does everything and it's much more lovable and useful than all the models I mentioned.

>It's an all time ubiquitous classic that does everything and it's much more lovable and useful than all the models I mentioned.
It's only a classic because it was a cheap model for poorfags. It had a dogshit display, only 2 RAM slots, and a cooling system which wasn't enough for a quadcore CPU. If you wanted good performance you either upgraded it, or you just bought a W520 which already has most upgrades and important ports like USB 3.0

playing old shit like tetris is based but solid, well built tech is dead and collecting chinkpads is nothing but nostalgia (mental illness). There's so much that went into building those thinkpads that consumers are just too stupid to understand.

Too bad the computer otherwise is a massive piece of shit*
I had one of these, theyโ€™re made of garbage, they turn to goo covered brittle plastic and are basically impossible to repair without chassis damage. Thereโ€™s a reason some nerds 3D modeled an entirely new 3D printable chassis for these.
And these were not rare machines, IBM sold a fuck ton of these. Itโ€™s just most of them did this life cycle
>business laptop used for 1-3 years
Because they were under specced even for their time they didnโ€™t last long when hardware was moving extremely fast anyway.
>they get replaced
>701c sits in a bag in a closet indefinitely
>someone finds it in storage a decade later
>the Nihm battery shell is prone to failure and canโ€™t maintain the pressure of the aging battery contents
>the battery has violently ejaculated acid into the 3 stacked motherboard layers inside
>the entire thing is teal crusty battery acid crystal covered
>itโ€™s thrown away
Repeat for 90% of all units sold
The remaining ones are units which were stored without their battery.
These are now also old enough like many 90โ€™s laptops to now have problems with failing power delivery board components, not leaking caps but just hardware being out of spec and not providing the right voltages anymore.
And itโ€™s a shame because they really are super cool machines, but theyโ€™re like the pandas of the retro hardware world, nature dictates their species should not survive but we keep some going just because we like them.

I'd easily fork over the money for Framework if they had an option for a keyboard with actual travel, I genuinely despise chiclet shit

Honestly these arenโ€™t that great. Even with ddr2 the Pentium M is kinda stunted
The screens yellow pretty bad and the rubberized coating doesnโ€™t get super sticky but it tends to rub off and hold dust.
I would argue the old R series from the same time is better long term, just because of how poorly the T series aged physically. The R series with the solid plastic bodies is just more durable if unfortunately more bulky

My Dad was an IT guy and growing up my mom wouldn't allow us to have our own computers but my Dad would just nig thinkpad laptops from work slated for destruction and secretly give them to my brother and I. I think he had a pile of like, 10 thinkpads hidden in the basement because every time my mom caught my brother or I with one she'd chuck the thing down the starewell and the next day he'd just give us another.

Eventually my Dad started getting annoyed at all the broken Thinkpads so he started nigging his workplaces Panasonic CF29s slated for destruction instead. I still have one, my mom tried tossing it down the stairs too and it didnt do shit.

I had a gaming laptop until now, and almost from the beginning it had problems with the GPU. It would be fine if it only happened when playing games or something, but the GPU would crash/drivers restart even when used by random software for GPU acceleration or something (like I think it crashed even with Chrome). It stopped doing it in old age, but I've been warry of "gaming laptops" ever since.

Got a used panasonic and put it on my thinkpad stack when I got home. It was a similar model to that one and it had almost the same footprint as my X200.

>admits that it's objectively better
X220 keyboard fits right into an X230 with only a bios update needed to use it, so the X220 doesn't even have that going for it.

More than capable for the modern day. As long as you don't need a good GPU.
