As someone who enjoys using both Windows and Linux, I never recommend the latter to people looking for a "free alternative" to the former.
Windows is fine. Most people just need to learn how to use it properly.
Linux is for people who are looking for something different, people who are interested in Linux itself for whatever reason. That is the only way someone will have the mentality necessary to learn and work through the problems it's inevitably going to throw at them.
