you can block ads by modifying the hosts file.
Some people online have preconfigured host files that block most common add domains. If you're on gnu/linux, depending on distro, there are adblocking software that work system wide (they also basically modify the hosts file automatically for you).

I just ended up grabbing the vimium extension. The only thing that trips it up is having to deal with scrolling side bars

hosts file wont remove dom elements. thats where most of the cancer is, the ads are just the icing on the cake
