PSUs are the component you should do the most research on

Kinda the opposite really
PSUs are literally the most well understood thing inside a PC.

It's just people nowadays have become absolute paranoid schizophrenics that think there is huge differences between PSUs when 90%+ of them exceed ATX specification by a huge margin.
>oh no this PSU has 25mv of ripple compared to 20mv, better spend twice the money because I surely don't want my PC to die
It's deranged sometimes

i feel like you may have fucked around and found out, just don't buy garbage and it will be fine
if it has a mains voltage selection switch, a gray housing or thin/not enough wires for its rating (say, it claims 600w rating but the cpu power cable only has 4 pins and a single pcie power cable) it's junk
also make sure you're getting something dc to dc for any modern computer (it may or may not be mentioned somewhere in the spec sheet, most modern psus are made this way)

Not really, just buy a good brand and make sure you have wattage far above your max power load

It's a joke with a slight Army of Darkness reference.

WTF marketing bullshit is this?
Every single PC PSU since the 1980s uses DC/DC converters.
That's like saying, only get a computer that uses a CPU.

psu manufacturers sometimes use this as a way of saying their power supplies are not group regulated
