>uses grapheneos for privacy
>actual text content of all texts is completely unencrypted and passes through several phone companies

>uses iphone because so does everyone else
>messages are all encrypted with post-quantum cryptography

Can someone please explain to me why anyone concerned about security and privacy would refuse to use Apple products?

>just use signal/whatsapp/... bro!
Then you're giving your metadata to Meta, who is a far worse actor than Apple, and you have to convince all of your contacts to use the same chat app as you. The desktop apps for Signal and Whatsapp are also not native like iMessage, and Signal and Telegram include completely unnecessary crypto features that a chat app should not have.

As a pixel user I'll happily admit that iphones are better. Even with graphene real privacy is hardly possible because it can't do shit about google's hardware. Also now that every migrant gang and drug dealing retards use graphene having that on ur pixel also makes you extra suspicious to law enforcement.
The only thing holding me back from switching to iOS is the app store. I like being able to install third party apk's like revanced and whatnot because there is no way I'm gonna pay money for youtube premium.
However considering the recent developments I fear the small room of freedom you have with android won't be around for much longer. In that case I'll get a iPhone for sure.

Tell me you don't know what you're talking about without telling me you don't know what you're talking about

>>106121048
1. depends on where you live
2. would you rather give your metadata to Apple or Meta?
3. they are introducing ads to WhatsApp now

>>106121050
That makes sense.

That is just for whatsapp not signal

Who get the same metadata that signal does

no I don't, and even if I did, I would have to do the same thing to get them all on apple devices
>The desktop apps...
irrelevant to a discussion about graphene
> include completely unnecessary crypto features that a chat app should not have.
valid, feel free to not use it

I guess it depends on who you talk to. ~80-90% of my contacts have iPhones and maybe 5% use Signal, so yes, I would have to convince all of my contacts to use the same chat app as me on GrapheneOS.

and 90% of the people I talk to don't have iphones, and I don't need encrypted message with every single person I communicate with, I don't have the threat model of someone trying to pull of an assassination or leak confidential information.

There have been breaches of entire SMS databases before that had been retained by telecom companies.

I am not claiming the government gives a shit about you, I am simply pointing out that criminals have previously accessed and leaked millions of text messages retained by telecom companies, meaning the shitposting memes you send to your friends could easily be associated with you forever in a readily accessible database breach.

I would like to know what you give instead of your phone number to someone when you meet them? Do you add them to your discord kitten server?

>>106121390
Quite difficult to enable, you have to let Goolag have access to a bunch of stuff on your phone and even then it would seem to be hit-or-miss. Google claims it's an open protocol but it seems like it's basically just them and Apple and Samsung who actually have access to it.

These threads are my only reminder that americans still "text" people (as in sending SMS). I think in most of Europe if you mention "texting" people will automatically assume you're talking about whatsapp.

There are parts of Europe where that isn't the case. Americans use WhatsApp too sometimes, but I prefer that we use text messages predominantly--although they are a legacy unencrypted form of communication, we are not locked into the heavily obfuscated data mining centralized WhatsApp. I feel safer with the government than with Meta because at least the government is incompetent. (The American government actually recently officially recommended that we download WhatsApp or Signal! Why don't they just regulate Apple and Google so they play ball and set up encrypted RCS?)

It depends on the phone in my country. Android users will use Facebook Messaging and iOS will use iMessage. The dream is to have everyone use Signal but people would think I'm a schizo if I tried to recommend it or explain why.

all communication on all phones is surveilled.
don't be naive.
if you want privacy (which doesn't matter from the NSA unless you're a terrorist) then don't use a phone and don't carry one with you (and don't carry other tech either).

Yeah I switched to iPhone just cause I’m at a point in life where I got too much work to do than to care about what phone I use. I do agree the freedom Android is supposed to have has certainly slipped closer and closer to Apple products every year

I gave up on Android during the peak bloat era when Samsung and LG were filling it with their own shit (like Bixby and that strange custom UI from a long time ago). It seems like Android then got stripped down a little for a while on the Nexus and early Pixels, but is then getting bloated and more restricted as time goes on (especially with Play Services).

I also work in finance these days and basically everyone in white collar work like that is using an iPhone for the ecosystems and everything being more organised.

I get that, I switched because I got an iPhone for free from a friend and my Android phone was getting outdated. Otherwise, I just get whatever is cheaper because every phone can do everything nowadays anyway. As long as it can do music, videos, texting, calling, and porn, I’m set

I splurge on the Pro models every few years for the camera, it's pretty worthwhile. I also don't upgrade as much as I used to since differences between phone models seem to be getting smaller and more boring every single year.
