They had to get you hooked before flipping it into outright psychological warfare, humiliation, and degradation.

Cell phones and wifi + chemtrails hadn't given people enough brain damage yet. That generation was also less vaccinated. The current designers were highly vaccinated and have never known comfort in any form. Many of them are also circumcised. The others are brown.

It was the skeuomorphism, they were made to look like things in the real world like glass, wood, etc. Now UI is minimalist and boring. It normally looks like printed paper with no personally just matte colors and text with the occasional globalhomo figure. Flat and boring.

Because they reflect the era they were designed in, they were bright, exciting and optimistic because that what the world was at the time, modern design is flat, boring and dark because everything went to shit and everyone is an NPC brainwashed into endless consumerism by mega corporations and things are only going to get worse

On a surface level, the problem is mostly that humans are losing categories of thought at a very rapid pace. The way of conceptualizing physical reality for the majority of people has become very simplified compared to back then, in part due to the fact that we live addicted to and inside our screens for most of our day. If you notice how bland and "soul-less" creativity has become, it means you are still above the norm in that regard. But nobody is immune, and unless something changes, we're going to end up like pic related.
The complete answer goes into metaphysics, and /g/ won't like it. Which is part of the problem, ironically.

tl;dr: brainrot

That's not what they said, they said that was the general state of society, which absolutely wasn't the case. It might have felt that way to them because they were still in their preteens so current affairs like the "war on terror", the financial crisis, SARS, and hurricane Katrina weren't relevant to them.
