That hubris is often the undoing of many men who vastly overestimate their own importance.

I can empathize with him to a certain extent, where if you work in places like the corporate world you have to sing to someone else's tune and release software that you know is unfinished and garbage. It feels good to be able to make the final call and release it.

But he's taken it to an extreme where he's searching for perfectionism and is actually too afraid to just release things. It's really okay if it bombs Jonthan. Learn, move on. Just think of all the games he could've made if he wasn't focusing on stuff that doesn't matter.

I don't think there would be that many.
The reason being - I don't think he actually really likes games that much.
And his perfectionism is a weird way he copes around that - he wants to like games - but he doesn't (because he grew out of them, or whatever...) and he rationalizes it with his belief that there's something wrong with what was his strongest passion in the past and him needing to use his unique expertise to fix it.

Why do certain guys stay in the friendzone, in a lot of cases for years? Because they know if they tell the woman, listen you're stringing me along, wasting my time, so we either go on a date or we stop talking that they'll just get rejected. That crushing of their inflated ego and strong desire to avoid it is why they can waste hundreds of hours doing things they don't even want to do, because it keeps the situation ambiguous and their ego intact. I suspect a similar thing is going on with Blow and games.

I think the actual reason why he makes games is because he sees them as the means to show how clever he is. That can be completely orthogonal to actually enjoying the process sure. But if your ego is all that's really motivating you then everything is downstream from that. Which includes the desire to hold off releasing something because ego comes first, not the game or the language or whatever other thing he's trying to use as a prop to show us how smart he is.

And look, maybe this kind of thing is fine if you're in your teens or early 20s, but he's in his 50s. He should've matured by now.
