I think I’m ready to just buy a Kindle.
I’ve had a reMarkable tablet but books are shitty on it. The tablet is too big and not meant for reading. I still plan to read physical books, this is just going to be my travel companion.
My question is, is the Paperwhite actually worth the extra money? It seems like the basic Kindle is all you need.

Do you intend to buy books from the Amazon store? Or are you looking to sideload? If sideloading, a Kindle may not be the best choice.
Anyway the main difference between the regular Kindle and the PW is size. The PW is the perfect size for reading, imo. Regular Kindle is too small.

You could get Kobo instead, either a Clara BW or Libra 2. Kindle is extremely gimped in what you can do with it to the point that you have to convert ordinary epubs.
If you really want a Kindle, get a used one.
Remarkable is still smaller than most pocket books, the main problem is the reader software.

I hate smallshit readers that are the size of my phone and much smaller than any books I own. I got ViWoods because it's Aryan white and got perfect contrast of Carta 1300. Fuck those other small toilet paper grey readers.

I love my kindle! (old paperwhite, maybe gen 4?) It's not ideal for all types of reading material, but it's a nice thing to have for sure

I strongly recommend getting a case with it. Specifically, one with a ring or handle or strap on the back..if you're a fidgety person like me. I bought the overpriced $40 official amazon waterproof case and it's pretty rad. but the lack of handle is irritating

You can sideload just fine on a Kindle. I've had my PW2 for like a decade and it works fine.

never had issues with importing files into it
it's awful for PDFs even after using a tool called K2pdfopt to try and fix them up
I haven't bought a single book from Amazon and I keep it online without concerns. Im sure they could cut off people's access to custom content, and that they know how people used their kindles based on telemetry. But that has not happened yet and nobody seems concerned since you can probably bypass that by just not taking the device online

I prefer Kobo (currently own the Libra 2) because I didn't want a connection with the scamazon branding/ecosystem. If that doesn't bother you, a Kindle is likely fine.

Get a Kobo. I just got rid of my Kindle because of how shitty and locked down it is and will never look back.
Kobo has an easily accessible config file that lets you replace the Sync API URL to whatever you want, including a self-hosted instance of Calibre Web.
Earlier today I just set up a bunch of books' metadata the way I like it on my server, then I just clicked "Sync" on the reader and it pulled everything straight from my server without any gay vendor service getting in the way. Life's good.

There's multiple formats. I agree the Clara/Verse format with 6" screen is just too small to be comfortable. 7" is about the size of a pocket A-format and is the minimum for comfortable reading. Bigger models (8" and up) are fine too but maybe more situational (like if you want to read comics on it for example) and will be a bit less convenient for carrying around and using outside of your house.

Unless you are willing to jailbreak it, don't get a Kindle.

Uhm, no? You can sideload any (non encrypted) mobi file, and you can convert epub to mobi. You can also convert manga to mobi with KCC.
>pdf
If you wan to read PDFs, get a fucking android tablet.

Didn't they kill mobi support a few years ago?
It's pointless since nobody has mobi files aside from converted epubs and you can just convert to azw3 instead.

I don't know, I stopped buying any official Amazon content when they made it impossible to decrypt new releases easily, but I suppose they no longer give you mobi. There are tons of pirated mobi files out there though.
But you can always convert epubs, and the conversion process goes pretty well.

Onyx Boox are great. Good for reading, good for note taking, and it's also literally just an Android tablet.

is it still easy to jailbreak kindles and put an epub reader onnit? If so, why wouldn't anyone do this.

Buy a Kobo instead, this way you'll be able to just drop any ebook you have on it instead of having to pay yard earned cash to Bezos for the privilege of "owning" digital copies

If you read epub 6' is plenty enough since you can just make the letters bigger.

Don't buy kindle. Jailbreaking is impossible on the latest version of firmware (for now) and using stock kindle is a pain: ads, your books getting removed or their content edited, Amazon is pushing email only upload more and more, pirated books are blocked from transfer

here's the problem with your suggestions /g/

you're pushing epubs and stuff through libgen. having tried all of that, i don't enjoy reading those files.
i've found with music it doesn't matter what you download or where. if you buy a FLAC, it's high quality. if you download a FLAC from somewhere else for free, it's still the same quality.
these epubs from libgen are often not the same quality as an Apple iBook or Amazon Kindle book.
