In light of all the web censorship governments are doing these days, I'd like to know a way to evade these IP blocks without having to pay extra for a VPN, and ideally without needing to be tied to a specific web browser like Tor.

Can any of those be used without installing their specific VPN client software on the machine I'm trying to browse with? I'd like to make things as OS agnostic as possible, which is hard to do if I'm tied to a proprietary VPN client.

5€/month for mullvad, or pay a few pennies for SOCKS5 proxies (ideally residential)
if the west figures out how to do deep packet inspection (DPI) like pocкoмнaдзop, theres zapret and byedpi (aka ciadpi) to get around this, plus mullvad's DAITA (has to be implemented server-side, so that won't work with any random proxy/vpn)

>tied to a specific web browser like tor
tor doesn't tie you to a specific web browser, start your tor daemon and use socks://127.0.0.1:9050 as your proxy in any browser (or any other program)
for programs that don't support proxies out of the box, theres proxychains-ng or torsocks
otherwise, set your $http_proxy, $HTTPS_PROXY, and $ALL_PROXY environment variables, that should work for most things.

also its worth mentioning, you should not use anything that forces you to use a specific vpnshit client. stick to openvpn/wireguard.
some vpns offer free (as in freedom) clients with extra features or convenience that isn't in wireguard/openvpn, like DPI evasion. those are fine, but you should actually audit them and make sure there isn't anything sketchy about it. the rule of thumb is, if you can't compile it yourself, its jewish.

Its not all this board is, but its not unreasonable to ask questions when search engines are as unusable as they are in current year. A lot of the time it is easier to ask a real human being question than it is to get a bunch of unrelated results from a search engine or a bunch of lies from an AI.

you seem to be saying that social media/discussion sites/whatever are now the only way to get valid information. this is far from the truth. for example, wikipedia provides a good explanation, and keep in mind they have two versions if the standard is too complicated for someone (though careful reading is all you need), replace the "en" subdomain with "simple"

thats a less stupid question you indirectly asked
>how do i get a working search engine
SearxNG. there are a bunch of public instances at https://searx.space, sometimes instance X works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes other ones work.
the best thing you can do is to self host your own searxng instance, because it just scrapes normie search engines, removes garbage, and combines all the results for you. normie search engines like jewgle/duckduckgo/yandex LOVE to rate limit you and bombard you with captchas if there are too many searches (like with public instances that are used by hundreds of people), so self hosting should solve this problem.
anyway, here are the instances i usually use (they work most of the time)
https://searxng.ru/
https://searx.bndkt.io/
https://cia.govt.hu/searxng
https://search.nerdvpn.de/
also, if you self host your own instance, you can blacklist or rewrite/redirect specific sites. this is very useful for getting rid of all the r*ddit shit links that fill up half of my search results, despite r*ddit blocking my IP just because i refuse to create a good-goy account, i love when retards lock information behind proprietary shit forums nobody wants to use that randomly block your IP from even viewing anything.
you can also replace all r*ddit/twitter/etc.. links with freetard frontends to those sites, that allow you to view them without getting raped by JS and IP blocks.

Free ones farm your data, that's how they stay free. You're better off paying for one that has a believable no-logs policy (as it's up to you to really believe it or not), so IVPN or Mullvad would probably be the only good ones. IVPN has more servers than Mullvad for what that's worth.

I just spent the last few hours setting up wireguard on a cheap VPS in the netherlands, ironically it was actually faster and easier to get a VPS using crypto on TOR than it has been to try and find one on clearweb that doesn't want my whole identity and KYC upfront for a staggering 1CPU, 2GB of ram and 1gbps internet connection worth of power.

im not sure why the rulers dont just get 4chan taken down. they could easily just make up some pretense as an excuse to take this site down permanently. they have a reason to let this site stay up, even though its probably the biggest community in opposition to them. still this site is heavily censored by jannies and shittified by shills, but its about the best bastion of free speech on the internet.

Most of the time I post from my own IP, I set up split tunneling so I can open 4chan pages but send replies without the VPN, it's sorta partially blocked here. There are proxies that work though, fuck paying for pass lol
>And doesn't Russia go hard at VPNs and jail people for using them?
Nope, not yet at least. Right now they go hard with DPI and black/grey lists, most usual protocols like Wireguard and openvpn no longer work (even shadowsocks is dead pretty much) for outside connections and plenty of datacenters are black listed, but currently it's possible to circumvent. VLESS works great.

In Russia Tor only works with bridges or snowflake plugin. But the main torproject domain is blocked, so you have to get bridges by sending an email to them or get them from the telegram bot. I would strongly suggest to keep all the backups of Tor Browser, bridges, binaries etc just in case.

Personally, I use arti binary (the new Tor in rust) because it has less connectivity issues with snowflake. All of it works as a socks5 proxy.

I tried buying a bunch of VPNs, but they all get blocked eventually no matter what. Looks like Tor is the only solution that has been working for over a decade for me.
