Bullshit meme ar. 16:9 alligns more or less with a person's complete field of view, but what you want is something much more square, like 4:3 or 5:4 because that's closer to what the fovea actually uses, so it allows for better immersion and less visual, blindspot waste at the right distance.

Widescreens are terrible for everything. 4:3 and 3:2 are better for everything. The field of view story is a lie by the way, unless you are an extraterrestrial. Widescreens exist because of cinema format, and the reason why cinema format was ultrawide was to save cost on film.

It's good for productivity because it's wider than it is taller and that means you can fit multiple windows side-by-side because:

The only exception to this rule is reading articles or programming which are best done on a vertical aspect ratio. At least this is my take on monitors.
