I bought one instead, it has mobile wifi hotspot functionality. If somebody wants to get ahold of me they can email me or whatever. Only my mom likes to call on the phone lol.

I refused to get one for a long time until I got a free ipad.
The ipad was shit but I saw the light and got a used samsung tablet. Pretty much everything I do on my phone is a better experience on my tablet besides being out and about.

got one as a jellyfin and Kavita client
pretty decent for it esp in my office environment where we admins have unrestricted access to the internet

I get your point, software wise it's just like a smartphone, and it's essentially a worse laptop, though the lack of a fixed keyboard makes it more portable, also the bigger screen compared to the smartphone makes it better for content consumption, reading or drawing, so as an artist it's a great tool for me, also for playing video games things like shaders look a lot better on its screen as opposed to the smartphone, using a telescopic controller with it makes it a much nicler handheld too, it's a fun companion device.

It's niche... but the things its good at? It excels at.

This is the right answer. I hate reading books on my big ass screen smartphone. It's still way too small for that task and my screen is like a skateboard. Best portability vs usability.

Watching videos in bed on a tablet with earphones is way nicer too when you don't want the TV screen lighting up the entire room to awaken your girlfriend.

Tablets and phones need better integrated wireless sharing features though without using a computer as a go-between. There are apps for that but it would be better if was a standardized protocol and procedure that could be locked down if enabled.

I agree with the sentiment but cheap (READ: Under 700 dollars) don't seem to come with an OLED thus negating their use in the dark at bedtime. Tho I hear the new Redmagic has an OLED but I'm not looking to replace my tablet anytime soon and it is only 9"
