It was working nearly 24/7 for almost 15 years just fine but recently it started to show pending sectors and read errors along with chkdsk scanning when booting. I decided to scan it with victoria but when it reached 70% it started to make loud grinding noises and my pc froze, I had to forcefully shut it down, my pc wouldn't start until I plugged off the drive. I don't even know if scanning the drive is so harmful or it was a on its last legs already. I did clone it a year ago. It feels like a piece of old world died and I will never find another hard drive that would last at least 10 years.

I'm surprised it lasted that long because I have like 10 drives that failed before even reaching a third of its lifespan. It still had win xp and it has many things of sentimental value and childhood memories. I cloned it on 3 drives (one unplugged sitting on shelf) and my pc boots twice as fast. It was a genuine old school drive before shit like smr, head parking, pwl were introduced.

I've had a shitty seagate that's lasted 8-10 years with light use

Victoria has some extreme settings that can diminish a drive's lifespan, but if it actually kills the drive, it was probably on its last legs already.

Need to be swapped out at 8-10 years. Beyond that, you are "gambling" and hoping not to get wrecked (which is bloody inevitable), newfriend.
At least you had that year-old backup.
