I got a similar update for my pixel 4a half a year ago, it made me realize that modern phones are basically single-use trash, and that I'd better switch to a refurbished nokia dumbphone. But then I installed LineageOS which made my pixel usable again, for maybe couple more years

no but you can downgrade it (if you're okay with losing your data), but if you're erasing all of your data you may as well get lineageos

My 6 is still kicking just fine, the idle drain is only "high" when I'm in the basement, I assume cause the mobile signal degrades.

you have a hardware warranty, not a software one.
There is no warranty implied or otherwise for the software. All they are responsible for is ensuring the device works with the software it comes with. Updates etc are at the risk of the user.
