The firmware was never open source. It was always binary blobs uploaded to AOSP which made building Graphene easy by just pulling source code. Now they have to use a google developer account to pull firmware for builds.
AOSP should not have binary blobs anywhere. AOSP is insanely bloated with device specific builds from pre Android KitKat. The recent firmware change is bad news if google stops upstreaming changes to AOSP (which the Graphene devs seems to think is happening). It's probably a nothingburger since it's happened before, and if google is paving the way for GSI builds everywhere while cleaning the codebase from ancient custom builds I would say that's a good thing.

GrapheneOS sucks. Cashapp and my bank app can't even work on it. LineageOS figured out how to fake being a normal Android OS install, Graphene devs still can't even figure it out.

You should only be using android for banking, emails and basic browsing anyway. It was always a data harvesting system designed to pipe you ads.

AOSP is still Open Source. Google has no Responsibility to Give away their Work for Free. If Users want AOSP to be Better they need to Work on it and Develop their Own Relationships with Vendors. Start a Business. Serve the Market. Google is not Responsible for Doing the Work for You.

Google never gave them such access, so they have to pull blobs directly from stock images like everyone else does for other phones. For example if you want to build LineageOS, you must extract firmware blobs from stock OS or get it from thirdparty repository.
