How did Intel manage to sell so many of these things despite them being inferior to the competition in every way?

I ask the same about Pentium D.

That would explain the sheer number of Dell prebuilts with P4 and PD processors, but I do have a couple AMD Dell machines from that time. What was the specifics of this? Were they told to only sell a certain amount? Only sell AMD to certain people?

Anyone who had any clue about anything knew that the claims of Intel and the premise of ShitBurst architecture of attaining ridiculous clock rates was completely ridiculous.

Absolutely. Pentium M-based chips were the only Intel ones of that era that ran at somewhat sane temperatures.

Northwood ran chill and had a HUGE OC headroom, don't condemn Pentium 4s just because of Prescott. And today's CPUs are furnaces by comparison anyway.

Branding, that's the same reason why people kept buying Intel after zen architecture made their product technically inferior.
