Sadly, the reddit website has become a travesty - especially on mobile. A huge "DOWNLOAD THE REDDIT APP" banner obscures literally 30% of the page. There is a teeny-tiny "view on mobille site" link in small, low-contrast text that can be used to dismiss the annoying banner. Due to its size and user-hostile design, the Reddit banner is even worse than most news sites that try to push their newsletter/app/subscription with similarly annoying banners.

Apps are spyware that gain full access to your phone storage and sensors regardless of permissions.

Because 95% of normies don't know how to turn off notifications, which means app users can be spammed for their attention. And it works.
I recall an A/B test we did measuring user focus time. "shitty UI but minimal notification" (in constrast with "perfect UI but no notification") kept users engaged a lot more.

try RedReader. not perfect but it works. I'm sure it uses a web crawler in the background.

PHBs didn't get the memo that having an app instead of a mobile-first website was a fad that should have died in 2015. A former co-worker recommended me for a job at Amazon and I told the manager who called me that Amazon shouldn't even have an app.
