Why are there no good ereaders? It's always some combination of:

>shitty locked down software
>forces you to convert your books into their proprietary format
>ads
>poor battery life, which defeats the purpose of having a low-power-consumption screen technology
>no frontlight
>no buttons
>crappy buttons that don't work
>color screen with bad contrast and bad colors
>ghosting galore
>too small to read PDFs
>too big and heavy to hold comfortably
>questionable build quality
>Chinese spyware

It's literally a device for reading. Who cares. The CCP won't go after you for reading the Unabomber manifesto. And they won't delete books like Amazon

Kobo Clara E2. Probably old and not in production.
That company makes it easy for you to skip even making a user. In the past I had to just make an sql query on my desktop to bypass it, but today I read there is just a config file instead you edit (looka like a USB stick when you connect to desktop, yea also on linux).
Takes mobi, best format for ebooks. You want pdfs you gonna need to pay for the more expensive models or live with the laaaggg

Oh good a thread I can ask this in.

I currently have a tab S8+. Is it worth it to get a dedicated e-reader (either one that can fit in my hand or one that is roughly tablet sized) or should I just stay with the current tab? What are the advantages of e-readers over just regular tablets in the first place? If I plan to read both books and manga then is it even worth it to look on e-reader's direction?

Consider it a luxury, since you already have a suitable device.
Advantage to e-ink is easier on eyes without backlight, and having a dedicated device prevents you from tabbing over to something more stimulating. As always, a purchase will not solve a willpower problem.
>manga
You won't have color, last I checked color eink is really low contrast. Most manga look great, but a color page (covers) will be greyscale. Turn on b&w mode on your tab and see if that bugs you.
It depends on the device, but you may have lower resolution. If you want to peek small details, you'll have to zoom, and smooth zooming sucks on eink.
That's only 1% of the time, otherwise it's more immersive than using a phone or tablet.

I have a Boox Nova3, use it a lot but I wish it were a little bigger.

Power efficiency. You enable night mode in your PDF reader. Turns the screen pitch black and only the pixels that show text light up, pic rel. Instantly 2x to 8x your battery life.

comes down to the format of the book, probably pdf in this case. you can't reflow ir resize text in a pdf so I'd say you're probably better of with a tablet or even a phone.
epub and co? e-readers are superior.

Get a tablet with a stylus so you can solve the tasks right in the book and comment text on the margins.

No it isn't. You can just flash a custom android rom if you are that worried. There are plenty of people that do that with their android ereaders.

Yeah, the problem isn't muh size doesn't work with pdf. The problem is that retards use pdf instead of epub. The entire point of ereader and such formats is that they can be read easily in any size you want.
