How did they manage to reach the top so quickly and completely dominate AI despite being late to the game?

Google's AI is as shitty as everything else they've done since 2015.

Google's been leading in AI for decades. Their researchers published the paper that led to the current generative AI tech boom in 2017. They were asleep at the wheel though around the time when ChatGPT launched though, although they had similar tools internally already.

They have infinite money and compute so it's pretty easy for them to catch up.

Isn't it clear LLM's were invented by feds to scan and summarize millions of phone calls for intelligence/ domestic spying since the 90's at least? Google has always been a government front. Google is not late in the game. The plan was to reveal AI through friendly sounding organizations like "openai"

Google are the people who invented all the technologies that have led to LLMs/AI and theyโ€™re worth trillions so they can throw tons of money into R&D

Have you seen Genie3? They're making a comeback. They are doing more than just the LLM rat race.

They already had paved the road or it but decided t was too early to walk on it back then. The moment OpenAI threatened their dominance they decided to run on it.

They have been sitting on their AI inrfa since they did not think it would be economically viable, now they have to use it just for maintaining dominance or even just for survival even

They weren't late. They were just keeping it under wraps until ChatGPT exploded onto the scene.
