What does /g/ think of self hosting everything even if it seems retarded?

Think about it; Why dox yourself to Google just to get an email address when you can just self host your own mail server?
Why give Discord your phone number when you can just self host XMPP and Mumble?
Why use social media when you can make your own website and forum?
Why play on Steam when you can NOT opt into the privacy violating DRM platform??

>whos gonna use my shit????
Anyone who believes in having a vast and open Internet and isn't afraid to leave the Bubble of Google.
Minecraft servers, especially cracked ones are a very good example of this, along with Xonotic and others. Steam is a proprietary platform that has declined in performance, optimization and overall quality when it comes to its client, but it is heiled as the backbone of Linux because of Proton, which is difficult to use on its own without complying with the Steam and their TOS.

Is this not a good approach to the internet? What does /g/ think of websites that do that such as pic rel?

>we have /hsg/ retard
/hsg/ has consisted of reddit-tier retards who do nothing but talk and/or complain about their hardware working or not working instead of the actual self hosting part.

Feel free to post about your self hosting experiences, shit you self host, shit people you know self host, or self hosted sites and services in general.

trying to self host in clearnet now is like trying to publish a magazine. too much regulation.
the only solution is I2P.

What's the current foss go-to for forum hosting?
I ran a few proboards as a teen and one cracked xenforo site like 8 years ago now, but I'd like to host a proper forum. I don't like the post stickers system on Xenforo and also don't want to use a cracked version if it'll wind up reported, though I guess I could just wait until that happens and buy a license if need be.

>Internet, but slow as fuck
I2P is basically Tor except the client is also a router/node in the network. It suffers the same issue as Tor regarding speed because now every jeet with a 100Kbit connection will kill the speed for each client routing through him.

there are plenty of open source forum technologies out there. It all depends on what kind of forum you want. A lot of open source forums are programming/bug-reporting/jira oriented like discourse, talkyard and nodebb. But there are other more general purpose forums out there like phpBB or apache answer (the later being a clone of stackexchange)

It's just a niche fan-forum, but it's not programming-oriented, which is part of why I didn't quite like Discourse. I'm thinking the old forums, like how you see some old car/hobby forums, but with a bit of customization for polish. Flarum seems to really want to be mobile-friendly first, but I want something that's more concerned with desktop.

Honestly, phpBB is still the best for that. Other forums want to look pretty, but are really bare bone in terms of feature. You can get the interface to look however you want and it has most features that other paid forums have (e.g xenforo)

I still don't get why PHPBB3 exists when PHPBB2 can do all that I need it to. BB3 still feels alien to this day, like a monolith that I can't wrangle correctly, while BB2 is straight forward and direct as to how everything works.

And on top of that, BB4 is almost here, albeit stuck in some sort of development hell and looking like generic flatshit..

what am I to do..

>Rangeban the majority of the world
This would fix the speed issue but also reduce the userbase by 70%. I2P/Tor can't be fixed. We need something that doesn't require routing through multiple proxies.

Yeah, it looks like a lot of the ones I used to visit transferred over to Xenforo. I remember proboards pretty fondly but I was a tween back then and it looks like they're still closed source.
